You may not have time to read this long interview with Kenny Chesney as he starts coming to the end of his long and profitable tour. But I did. And I’m happy to share some of the quotable parts with you. He has sold, according to this well-researched story, some seven million tickets. So whatever he’s doing, he’s doing it right. Any would-be stars should take his word as gospel.
Like when he talks about how exhausting it all is, he adds that “When we’re in front of all those people, when they’re taking everything we give to them and giving it back, that’s why you do it. That takes away any exhaustion you could possibly have.” So the fans wake him back up, I guess.
And when he says that the fans “don’t want to watch CNN, they don’t want to hear about health care. They want to play, have fun,” he must mean that beyond the music, people come to his shows to escape their problems. That might also explain why this summer, with the recession reaching new lows and unemployment reaching new highs, has been so good to Chesney. “Why this year arguably has been bigger than other years in these economic times, I can’t put a finger on that,” he admits.
But there’s also some very basic advice in this story about remembering what live music is all about. People do not come out to hear an artist do the same exact thing that’s on the album. And Chesney explains that thusly: “That’s what I love about live music, being a part of a shared moment for a couple of hours. It’s like church service. It’s like a revival.” And speaking of God, he adds that, “The way the world is right now, you should wake up every day and thank God that anybody cares about your music.” Amen to that.
