When Emily West was writing “Blue Sky,” I wonder if she was hoping to rope in Keith Urban from the get-go. The new song bills itself as featuring Urban, and it does. He’s really just got some nice backing vocals in the second half of the song, but his voice is distinctive enough that you know it’s him. And her voice is so quiet and lovely and soft and the piano so delicate, you could probably hear a pin drop in the background. I love the lines about “I’m not your blue sky anymore” and “I’m too gone to care.” Because if you’ve ever had a boyfriend/husband/lover who was abusive in any way, shape or form, and you finally had the guts to tell him you were done with him, this will be your new favorite so-long-you-bastard anthem.
